BAGUIO CITY, July 3 (PNA) - The city administrator here yesterday confirmed that Baguio city government is considering to lease its Asin hydro-electric plants which, for a number of years, enabled the city to receive millions of pesos as share in the power production.

Lawyer Peter Fianza said the initial idea for the move for a contract similar to the 20-period management of the Hydroelectric Corporation (HEDCOR) came about before City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Jr. left Monday for official trip abroad.

"Even the city council is now considering the option after a foreign-based study group determined that the facility could generate annually 24.68 million kilowatts of electricity worth some 2.3 million U.S. dollars. The city, however, to realize the maximum production would be spending 11.6 million U.S. dollars to totally rehabilitate the Asin hydro," Fianza explained.

Records show that after the lapse of the HEDCOR lease in 2007, the city government assumed the hydro plants' maintenance and production but the output has not been as high as before.

Fianza said the city government is yet to formally deliberate on the proposals to "let it to a private sector the management of the facility which would result in our better revenues and sustained production of clean energy from indigenous sources." (PNA)
