DUMAGUETE CITY, July 4 (PNA) -- A fresh graduate of the College of Mass Communication of Silliman University in Dumaguete City is among this year's Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP).

Stacy Danika Alcantara, who graduated summa cum laude in March this year, received the award July 2 at the Rizal Hall of the MalacaƱang Palace. She was the one who delivered the batch response, consolidating the common vision of the group. Five other awardees are from Central Visayas.

Crowned Miss Silliman when she was still in high school, Alcantara was a campus figure. She rose from the leadership ranks of the Student Government throughout her college years, and later became president in 2008, said SU information director Mark Raygan Garcia.

Alcantara was also an awarded debater and writer, continuing to blog about development issues for the website of World Bank's YouThink.

Her achievements have not been left unnoticed. She has received two prestigious distinctions prior to the TOSP: the Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines award and the Presidential Medal for Leadership from Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Another Sillimanian who was one of the select 30 considered for the national TOSP search is Marvin Flores. Like Alcantara, Marvin graduated summa cum laude with a degree in physics, said Garcia.

The TOSP is an annual recognition program that honors graduating college students who have not only excelled academically, but have also dedicated their talents and leadership abilities in making a difference by becoming socially involved in their respective communities, organizations and fields of interest, for the greater good of their constituents and members.
