MANILA,
Oct. 21 (PNA) -- The newly-built Passenger Terminal Building (PTB)
worth Php45 million of Port Management Office (PMO) in Calapan will be
inaugurated by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) by 2009.
Atty.
Oscar Sevilla, PPA general manager, said "The construction of the PMO
Calapan is a welcome development not only to the local executives of
the city and the businessmen but specifically to the thousands of sea
traveling public who pass by the Calapan port daily."
Last
June 12, no less than former Press Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye,
inaugurated the PTB saying that "PPA has align its vision to that of
the national government to develop important infrastructures that would
provide comfort and convenience to the port traveling public as well as
attract visitors and tourists."
During
the inauguration, the roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) lines offered a
50-percent discount while Supercat gave 20 percent discount on fares
from Calapan to Batangas.
On
the other hand, Lex Barcala, Port Manager of Calapan, said the PTB is
equipped with air conditioning systems, Gang chairs (552 seating
capacity), access ramps/handrails for physically challenged, area for
nursing mothers, separate comfort rooms for men and women, diaper
changing table, properly labeled receptacles.
The
PTB has also canteen, souvenir shops, x-ray baggage machine, walk-thru
metal detector, handheld metal detector, ticketing booths,
communication booth and family restroom, Barcala said.
The
Port of Calapan is the main port serving Oriental Mindoro and plays a
vital role in the transport of general and RO-RO cargoes and passengers
to other provinces.
Main
commodities handled at the port are copra, rice, bananas, and other
agricultural products for outbound cargo; cement, fertilizer and
general commodities for inbound cargo.
The baseport is accessible by motorized vehicles from all points in Oriental Mindoro via the national road.

liners calling at the port are Alexis Shipping Lines, Beste Shipping
Lines, Manila Ace Shipping Lines, Montenegro Shipping Lines, Shipshape
Ferry, Inc. Starlite Ferry, Inc., Supercat Fast Ferry Corporation.
It serves as a direct link to the Strong republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) Eastern Seaboard of the administration. (PNA) |
