Israeli-type greenhouse, agri tech open in Nueva Ecija
LICAB, Nueva Ecija, Dec 1 (PNA) — A greenhouse and an agriculture technology park which were donated by the Israeli government for farmers were inaugurated here on Monday.
Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Menashe Bar-on and Yaniv Revach, deputy chief of mission, led Israeli officials while Mayor Wilfredo Domingo and members of the municipal council led local officials in a program that also marked the launching of “Gulayan sa Pamayanan” project at Manggahan Resort here.
Central Luzon State University (CLSU) president Dr. Ruben Sevilleja and some agriculture officials also attended the launch that was expected to create alternative livelihood for farmers whose rice production were adversely affected by the recent typhoons.
Yaniv said the greenhouse that was originally designed for their country was re-designed to fit the Philippine condition.
The Israeli government also transferred through trainings conducted in the CLSU the know-how on vegetable production in a more secure and pest-free condition.
“This technology made the desert of Israel a garden,” Yaniv said, noting that despite a relatively small land area, his country has been exporting agriculture products.
The Israeli government, he said, has so far donated three greenhouses in Nueva Ecija.
He said they recently picked this town because of the heavy damage brought by typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel.”
Among the initial seeds being propagated at the greenhouse are ampalaya, lettuce, and cucumber which are considered cash crops.
Domingo said the greenhouse and seedbeds will shorten production period for farmers.
“They will be distributed to our people under ‘Gulayan sa Pamayanan’ so that they will have alternative source of livelihood in short period instead of giving them seeds,” the mayor said.
Aside from economic benefits, Yaniv sees the donation as a symbol of ties between the Philippine and Israeli governments.
“The people should know that the Philippines is the only country in Asia who voted for the resolution that created the State of Israel,” he added. (PNA)
