UN exec eyes outcome of P30-M disaster preparedness program in Sorsogon

SORSOGON CITY, Feb. 14 (PNA) –- A representative of the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP)arrived here on Wednesday to determine the preliminary outcome of the P30 million projects given to selected local government units for disaster preparedness and response (DPR).

Program coordinator Michelle McGonagle will be here for a three-day evaluation of project implementations in Casiguran, Juban, Irosin and Sta. Magdalena.

The four municipalities are placed under WFP after these were identified as areas that are highly vulnerable to natural calamities.

The WFP provided over P20 million for the project while its partners, the United States Agency for International Development’s Office (USAID) of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and the Australian Aid Agency contributed some P10 million as counterpart to the initiative that seeks to institutionalize DPR in project areas.

WFP, the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, launched the initiative in the province last September under Phase II of the program dubbed as “Technical Support to the Government of the Philippines for Disaster Preparedness and Response.”

Launched in the province last September, the program’s Phase II includes organizing information and education campaigns for communities on the risks they face and training local government units on using geographic information systems to enhance preparedness and response planning, according to Raden Dimaano, head of the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

Upon arrival, McGonagle met with members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), chief executives and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) officials of the four municipalities to determine the progress of project implementations.

Plans of action for the remaining project timeline and address gaps were also identified in the meeting where key information on DPR initiatives in the area were provided. (PNA)
